Microsoft Teams Phone is a capable business telephone system, and Microsoft continues to expand its features. However, Direct Routing primarily connects Teams Phone to a carrier through a certified Session Border Controller, or SBC. The Most Important Capabilities to Evaluate

Before migrating to Microsoft Teams Direct Routing without RingCentral, organizations should evaluate the following areas, listed in order of potential business impact:

Can the proposed Teams Direct Routing solution preserve every communications function the organization needs to remain operational and serve its customers?

1. Business Continuity During a Microsoft Teams Disruption

The most important potential deficiency is dependence on Microsoft Teams as the organization’s primary calling interface.

A Direct Routing telephone call may depend on:

Microsoft supports active and backup SBCs. Organizations can also deploy a Teams Survivable Branch Appliance, or SBA, to preserve certain PSTN calling functions during a Microsoft or network disruption.

However, survivability does not happen automatically. An SBA must be designed, deployed, configured, tested, monitored, and maintained. It also does not necessarily preserve every normal Teams function, such as voicemail, presence, queues, reporting, collaboration, and administrative services.

A properly designed RingCentral overlay can provide employees with another way to access business calling through the RingCentral desktop and mobile applications. If Microsoft Teams is unavailable or inaccessible, users may still be able to communicate through RingCentral.

4. Outbound Caller ID Selection and Management

Microsoft Teams Phone supports outbound caller ID. Administrators can configure users to display:

The risk arises when an organization assumes that connecting a carrier to Microsoft Teams will automatically reproduce every feature of its existing PBX or a full RingCentral communications platform.

Before choosing Teams Direct Routing without a RingCentral overlay, ask:
